RFID to control the cultivation of medical cannabis in Poland

Medical Cannabis Cultivation controlled with RFID in Poland

On the 29th March 2022 resulting from an act of the Polish parliament, the Polish President signed an amendment to the Act on Countering Drug Addiction. Within these amendments the use of RFID is specifically defined, to ensure that the plants are tracked during their grown, ensuring there is no direct theft or shrinkage through staff factors.

The result of the amendments to the act is that the use of RFID technology is a prerequisite for research institutions and they will only get a permit to cultivate non-fibrous hemp or cannabis if they have the technology to track the plants.

The act does not appear to explicitly state the RFID technology that should be used, however, a hybrid UHF and HF approach would be a sensible one. The ability to scan growing areas on mass with the UHF technology, while the HF providing benefits where samples are taken out of the cultivation areas for research.

Access control to these areas is also one where RFID provides tangible benefits. RFID access controlled doors not only provide for limiting of who can gain access, but also allows for record keeping of who accessed and when.

This is a rapidly expanding industry in many countries, with the potential benefits of cannabis and hemp oils being trialled for many health conditions including Alzheimer through to anxiety. Control of its growth is clearly something that is of concern to authorities, with the use of RFID technology and software tracking systems no only can the pants be tracked, but also access to that material be controlled and tracked. It is likely that this technology has been and will be adopted in other jurisdictions either through legislative requirement or good business practices.
